Jayde Goodon, known as Wizwon, is a graffiti, studio and tattoo artist from Regina, and is currently based in Saskatoon. He is a co-founder of the 11 Hooks Crew, a clothing line and artist collective in Regina.
Goodon has always loved to draw. In school, he became obsessed with creating unique letter-based styles of his name and the names of his friends. Playing with letters, shapes and colours led Goodon to graffiti writing, and eventually to influence his creation of large pieces that breathe life into the urban sphere.
Raised to be proud of his Métis heritage, Goodon’s style can be marked by his ability to mix traditional Aboriginal styles with realistic portraits and abstract elements. Curving contours, strong outlines, overlapping shapes and bold use of colours define his work.
Whether sketching, painting or tattooing, Goodon’s style continues to evolve. He recognizes that his growth as an artist is in part due to the inspiration he gains from other artists and friends. “Thanks to the people I surround myself by, I will never stop learning,” he says. It is the possibility of creating moments of joy and surprise within an otherwise predictable cityscape that brings Goodon a sense of satisfaction.
